Jackson, Michigan: Discover its Rich History and Hospitality

Categories: Tour & Travel Tips

There are many interesting communities in and around Detroit. One of the ones that most aroused my curiosity was Jackson.

It is only an hour’s drive from the big city. I wanted to get some fresh air and get to know some of the local history. It is interesting that one of the main industries in Jackson is the Michigan Department of Corrections. The story about how the community is related to the prison system is fascinating. With its museums, it’s fun craft beers, a town of pioneers and an energetic artistic center, Jackson is a truly unique and interesting place to discover.

Ella Sharp Museum

I was fascinated by the variety of exhibits, including photographs from the Second World War and the memories of several Jackson residents who participated in the war, the beautiful Tiffany stained glass panels, and an exceptional display of antique clocks.

Cell Block 7 Prison Museum

You can combine your visit to the Ella Sharp Museum with the Cell Block 7 Prison Museum (Prison-museum “Pavilion 7”). Unlike other famous prisons-museum of the United States, like Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco, California, this museum is located in an active prison, still in operation. While Pavilion 7 is no longer an active section, you can feel the intimidating nature of the huge prison around you. After all, this used to be the largest walled prison in the world. On a self-guided visit, I took the time to read the stories of the exhibitions. Many different points of view are presented, from that of a guard to that of a prisoner. It is an experience that invites reflection, to say something.

Waterloo Farm Museum

After the seriousness of the visit to the Cell Block 7 museum, we took a fun drive through the beautiful country roads, meandering and furrowed by trees to visit the Waterloo Farm Museum (Museum of the Waterloo Farm). We were warmly welcomed by members of the Waterloo Area Historical Society, who work voluntarily to maintain the facilities and manage the museum. Come and experience a fascinating excursion in this authentic farm from the 1800s with hosts dressed as pioneers. The gift shop has excellent handmade memories. I found adorable handmade hats for my goddaughter to wear when I play tea. That’s why wanna say thanks to our Food Walk Tour Guide.

Creativity and craft beer

Then, we traveled to the center to see Art 634. This place was great, since it is an artistic center located in a factory from the 1850s. Upon entering, I was shocked to discover a room where a sea hung gracefully from the ceiling. of delicate cranes. I could hear the sound coming from a ballet class on the top floor. This center has it all: from visual arts to dramatic arts. When you visit the place, take the opportunity to observe a class or find a gift to take home.

After so many activities, I was hungry and ready to relax. A fun place that offers excellent craft beer and good local wines is the Grand River Marketplace. This place is a combination of restaurant, brewery and live music and you can spend a beautiful evening full of food, drink and music. The perfect way to end a whole day of history, reflection and culture was with the hospitality of the locals and the good flavors.

Jackson is a friendly community and has the hospitality of small cities, plus a very interesting story to explore in Michigan. Do not forget to include Michigan on your next trip.
