Most people have dreamed about their wedding day most of their lives. You want everything to be perfect. Unless you are very lucky, you are working within a budget. But, how hard can it be? You buy the dress and flowers and walk down the aisle. How could anything go wrong?

The fact that the weddings you have attended look so easy, means that a lot of people worked very hard. If someone were to list every detail of what it takes to create that “easy” wedding, it would fill a book.

In this article we will explain some mistakes that will ruin your day and how to avoid these mistakes.

Mistake #1

“I can do it myself. I don’t need a wedding planner.”

This is almost always the first mistake a couple makes. No matter how big or how intimate the wedding is, you need a wedding planner.

Let’s assume you have no responsibilities at the moment. You have no job, no family obligations, no school, and no children. Even then, you would need a wedding planner. Why? Because a wedding planner is skilled in things that you may take for granted.

She knows how long you will need the venue. She understands the photographers need for proper lighting. She has a backup plan when things do not go as planned. She is attending to those things while you are having your hair and makeup done. She is heading off problems while you are getting into your gown. While you are preparing to walk down the aisle, she is making sure the limo is on time to take you to the reception. This is a fraction of the things she does. Even wedding planners hire wedding planners.

Mistake # 2

Wearing the wrong gown. Women usually know what type of dress they want to get married in. But there is more to it than style. Wearing the wrong color will fail to bring out your natural beauty and you could look washed out in your photos. Ivory wedding dresses compliment paler skin tones.  If you are pale but have yellow undertones or if you are darker, clear white will look great. Let the bridal shop professionals help you find the perfect dress.

Mistake # 3

Going over the budget.

This happens so often; it is mind-boggling. Couples start selecting their invitations, talking about venues, booking a band, and trying cakes before they have any idea of how much things costs and how much they can afford.

Before you do anything, you must decide on a budget. This is the easy part. You know how much money you have, so how much are you going to spend? Even if your family is paying for the wedding, they have a budget.

Sit down with your partner and list the wedding of your dreams. Then check off the items that you want but can live without. Now you have a workable budget. You will have to make choices. As you zero in on the parts of the wedding that matter most, you will find solutions. For example, if you are planning to serve prime rib and have a live band but cannot afford both, maybe you can serve chicken or pasta and save enough to hire your band.

Mistake # 4

Selecting the wrong venue.

The first thing you must ask is the maximum guests the venue can accommodate. Having a venue that is too small is frustrating and ruins the wedding. Having a venue that is too large is wasteful.

You must tour the venue. Check the wallpaper, chandeliers, carpet, and table tops. If you are having a wedding accents gold and the chandeliers are all silver, you have a problem. Check the parking, the businesses next door that could hamper guests coming and going. Tell the director of your issues and see if they have a solution. If not, move on.
