Some Common Signs It’s Time to Upgrade to a New Laptop

Categories: Technology Tips

If you’ve had your laptop for a while, then you might be wondering how you will know when it’s time to think about upgrading it to a newer model. There can certainly be a lot of signs that your laptop is getting to the end of its useful life or might even be past that point. Some of the most common signs that you should definitely start thinking about buying a new laptop include:

Not Turning On

Pressing the power button and nothing happening is a moment of dread for anybody who owns a laptop. However, before you rush out and buy a new one, it’s a good idea to make sure that it’s actually gone for good. There are a few troubleshooting steps that you can take including plugging it in to the charger to check that it’s not just run out of battery. Check to make sure that the cable isn’t loose if it’s plugged in and try a different power socket to see if that is the problem. You might want to take your laptop to a repair shop to see if they can do anything about it if all else fails, but in most cases, this is a good sign that it’s time for an upgrade.

Overheating

If your laptop is getting extremely hot when it’s been on for a while, even if you are doing everything right such as using it on a hard surface and keeping the room you are using it in cool, then it may just be that the internal components are coming to the end of their life, particularly the fans, which might simply not be working efficiently enough due to age. If after cleaning the laptop’s vents with compressed air and even trying a Lenovo cooling pad nothing seems to solve the problem, then it’s worth thinking about buying a new one.

Battery Problems

Over time and with regular use, the maximum capacity that your laptop’s battery can hold will begin to diminish. Repeated charging is of course necessary for anybody who uses a laptop for work or school, but this will deplete the battery over time and eventually, a full charge won’t last you very long at all. This might not be a huge problem if you mainly use your laptop close to a power outlet and don’t have any other problems with it. But if your laptop is always dying when you’re trying to use it when you are out and about, then it’s either time for a battery replacement or a complete laptop replacement.

Screen Issues

A failing display is another obvious sign that your laptop is on its way out and probably needs replacing. The screen flickering for no reason is a big sign of age. Or your screen might have physical problems such as cracks that are causing the display to fail entirely or in certain areas. While it’s possible to replace the display if there are no other problems with the laptop, if it’s getting old and you are having other issues, then it’s probably worth just upgrading completely.

Laptops are designed to last for a few years, at which point you might start running into these common problems that signify it might be time to consider upgrading.
