You must have heard it a lot of times before – Excess sugar is bad for your health. Most people are addicted to foods rich in sugar paying deaf ears to the recommended dose of 6 tablespoons per day. The most sugar-sweetened substance such as coca-cola drinks, biscuits, cakes, cookies and chocolates contain more than the recommended amount.
It is recommended to cut down on the amount of sugar-sweetened food and Snacks consumed every day. Excess intake unknowingly affects our health. Health they say is wealth! You certainly aren’t ready to trade your health for few minutes of pleasure.

1 – Increase the level of calories
Sugar is a factor that contributes to the risk of getting diseases like diabetes and Obesity which occurs as a result of weight gain. Sugar contributes a great deal to rise in the level of calories in our body system. Exercise is an effective way of burning excess fat on the body which most people fail to do due to their busy schedules, this results in more calories being stored that burnt, on the long run resulting to weight gain and Obesity.
The main problem with sugar-sweetened foods is that they contribute nothing interns of nutrient, with calories being the only major substance derived. Most people who took the stress of reducing sugar intake testified to their weight decreasing.
Cutting down sugar intake at once may be harder than you think, it is advisable to withdraw from it slowly. If you are used to consuming 2 bottles of coca-cola every day, I suggest you cut it down to one daily and slowly to 2 every week.
2- Increase Risk of Diabetes
Obesity is considered one of the strongest link to diabetes, on the order hand fat and sugar are attributed to be the major causes of diabetes.
Prolonged consumption of excess sugar causes insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which is responsible for regulating the blood sugar level. Excess sugar consumption causes the blood sugar level to rise when insulin develops resistance. This further increases the risk of diabetes.
Research shows that people who are addicted to sugar-rich foods like carbohydrates makeup a higher percentage of diabetes patients in hospitals.
It is worthy of mentioning that sugar doesn’t directly cause diabetes, it only acts as an influencer. It is weight gain which occurs as a result of excess sugar that increases the chance of getting diabetes. The most likely type of diabetes that arises from sugar influence is type-2 diabetes.
3 – Impair dental health
A lot of times we are cautioned against consuming snacks like Bubble gum due to its high sugar content which has a negative effect on our oral cavity. What we were never told is the series of events that cause harm to our teeth.
Dental research shows that the mouth is full of bacteria’s which are beneficial to our oral health. Unfortunately, these bacteria have the high affinity for sugar. Just as we love sugary foods, these bacterias also derive pleasure from feeding on sugar, as a result, it converts the sugar it feeds on to acids which are harmful to the outer covering of the teeth which is the Enamel.
One of such disease caused by these acids is “cavities”- a bacterial infection which causes a hole in your teeth, if not well taken care of may progress beyond the Enamel to the root, resulting in severe pain. When the pain becomes unbearable, the only solution is to remove the tooth.
Apart from costing you your health, Now you know sugar can also cause you your teeth and your beautiful smile.
It is also observed that people addicted to chewing gum are prone to having their teeth stained. It is not yet confirmed, but sugar is a prime suspect.
4 – Increased menstrual flow

Have you heard the saying that goes”you are what you eat”, unfortunately, we choose to ignore this most times? Nutrition is a basic necessity for everyone, especially the ladies. Unlike men, women have a well-tailored nutritional need due to their body’s nature and metabolism.
The food ladies eat do not only contribute to their body but also influence their menstrual flow. During this period, the nutritional requirement of every lady goes up, fruits and veggies are the right picks. Taking your time to observe the right nutritional need during this period will ensure a smooth and pain-free flow.
Eating too much sugar as we already know affects our blood sugar level, for a lady in her period this isn’t good. Ladies addicted to sugary foods are observed to experience heavy menstrual flow compared to others who doesn’t, it is advisable to limit the rate of sugar intake during your period.
Foods and snacks such as coca cola and the likes should be a No go Area.
5 – Risk of heart disease
It is observed that people who consume a lot of sugar regardless of their healthy Eating index score have higher cardiovascular mortality.
It is not yet known how sugar causes heart disease but is already established that fat contributes a great deal to heart disease. Fructose which is a form of sugar is known to cause disease.
6 – Affects sex drive
Just as sugar affects menstrual circle, it also affects sex urge. Men with high sugar level have troubles maintaining an erection during sex, low sex drive is often attributed to bad habits such as drinking, smoking, and hormonal imbalance. Little or no attention is paid to how sugar influences this.
