Why Is RO Purified Water Better Than Boiling Water?

Categories: Health Tips, Kitchen

Water from your faucet may appear clear but that doesn’t guarantee it’s safe to drink, or pure. Although the water treatment works add chemicals and filter debris to ensure the water reaches a certain standard, there is no guarantee that the water is at the same standard when it reaches your home.

Add to this the health risk associated with the chemicals added to water and you’ll know why many people are looking at water filters, specifically reverse osmosis Sydney

Reverse Osmosis Water

What Is Reverse Osmosis?

This is rapidly becoming the most popular type of water filter used in homes across the country and the world. Reverse osmosis involves using a semi-permeable membrane in your water system. Water molecules can pass through the membrane but many other things cannot.

The system pushes water into the membrane, this forces the water through and leaves the minerals and other substances on the original side. It’s actually the reverse of the natural osmosis principle. In this case, molecules will naturally move from a solution where there are few of them to a solution with a heavier concentration. Reverse osmosis reverse engineers this, keeping the molecules while forcing the water through the membrane. The more you do this the more concentrated the unwanted solution is and the easier the process becomes.

It’s effective at removing salts, bacteria, and pyrogens from the water. This includes chemicals such as the chlorine added by the water treatment works.

The water is deemed as safe because it eliminates the majority of harmful elements, drinking it won’t give indigestion issues.

How Is This Better Than Boiling Water?

Boiling water is an effective way to improve the quality of the water, it’s recommended if you have no other option. Boiling water kills the majority of bacteria in the water.

Most bacteria will be killed by the time the water boils, however, it is possible that some can survive longer, that’s why to be safe you’re recommended to boil the water for 10 minutes before using it.

You should note that, although boiling the water kills the bacteria, it has no effect on the chemicals and heavy metals that are in the water. These are removed with the reverse osmosis filter but boiling only kills bacteria.

Alongside this, boiling kills the bacteria but doesn’t remove them, they are still in the water and go into your body. In theory, this shouldn’t cause an issue but, there is a possibility that you’ll encounter further problems.

Of course, this means that drinking boiling water is time-consuming. You have to wait for it to boil, let it boil for 5-10 minutes, and then let it cool enough to drink.

Reverse osmosis filters are much more efficient. They are fitted into your water supply line and need virtually no maintenance. Every time you turn on the faucet the water that comes out has been purified. It’s ready to drink without delay.

In short, water treated by reverse osmosis is safer and more convenient
